The Swedish Institute for Children's Books

The Swedish Institute for Children’s Books (Sbi) serves a hub for the research and discussion on children’s and youth literature.  Since the foundation in 1965, we have worked to promote the children’s book, and increase the knowledge of children’s and youth literature.

We aim to stimulate a broad and open discussion about literature, and work to increase the competence and status of everyone working with children’s literature and culture.

The Swedish Institute for Children’s Books strives to both promote and support research. We offer a research environment with access to the institute’s research library, which includes a large collection of Swedish children’s and youth literature, as well as one of the world’s largest theoretical collections within the field. Researchers have access to a research room and library service. It is also possible for researchers to apply for grants to conduct research projects at the institute

Sbi arranges projects, conferences, workshops, and programs. Sbi also publishes the only Swedish scholarly journal on children’s and youth literature, as well as a scholarly monograph series in collaboration with various publishing houses. Current projects include an extensive history of children’s literature, a research project on Barnbiblioteket Saga (“The children’s library Saga”), and the hosting of the international conference IRSCL Congress 2019.

The Swedish Institute for Children’s Books is an independent foundation with grants from the Ministry of Education and Research and the City of Stockholm.
