Läs med Maud, Anne och Emily

20 maj 17:00 18:00

Reading with Young Maud, Anne, and Emily: Childhood Reading Practices in the Life and Works of L.M. Montgomery.

Anne Shirley, Emily Byrd Starr, and L.M. Montgomery were readers. The kind of voracious young readers for whom reading was an escape, a constant companion, and, sometimes, the source of (mostly humorous) conflict. All three girls found solace and connection in literature, taking inspiration from the pages of poetry, fiction, and history. This talk will explore how Montgomery depicted and celebrated the reading habits of young girls, including herself, as well as the ways all three girls sometimes challenge prevailing views of what childhood reading was ”supposed” to look like in the late 19th- and early 20th centuries.

Dr. Emily Woster is an Assistant Professor of English and Director of the Writing Center at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota, USA. Her research explores the reading and life writing practices of L.M. Montgomery. She is the Curator of the L.M. Montgomery Bookshelf Project, a physical and digital collection of some of Montgomery’s most interesting reads. She also co-curated, with Dr. Elizabeth EpperlyThe Anne of Green Gables Manuscript: L.M. Montgomery and the Creation of Anne (2023).
